The Minister for External Affairs on March 24 said India’s approach to the situation arising out of the Russian invasion of Ukraine was guided by its own interest and was based on six principles.
- These six principles espoused peaceful resolution through dialogue and diplomacy.
- In reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha, external affairs minister S Jaishankar underlined that India has called for humanitarian access and was providing material assistance to those in the war zone.

- Immediate cessation of violence and hostilities.
- There is no other way than the return through the path of dialogue and diplomacy.
- Global order is anchored on law, UN Charter and respect for territorial integrity and sovereignty of all states.
- Calls for humanitarian access to a conflict situation.

- Remain in touch with the leadership of both Russia and Ukraine.
India’s stand at UN
- India on March 24 abstained in the UN General Assembly on a resolution by Ukraine and its allies on the humanitarian crisis in the war-torn eastern European country. The resolution was adopted with 140 votes in favour, 38 abstentions and five against.
- India had previously abstained on two occasions in the Security Council and once in the General Assembly on resolutions on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
