Indian Navy has launched two Diving Support Vessels in Visakhapatnam on September 22. The two vessels have been manufactured indigenously by Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL).
- The launch of these DSVs comes just after the Navy had commissioned the first Indigenous Aircraft Carrier INS Vikrant at Kochi.
- The launch of the two DSVs, Nipun and Nistar, was held in the presence of Indian Navy Chief Admiral R Hari Kumar.
Key points
- These indigenous Diving Support Vessels will serve as INS Nipun and INS Nistar. DSV Nistar and Nipun have been indigenously designed and developed by the Hindustan Shipyard Limited for the Indian Navy.
- The vessels have a displacement of 9,350 tonnes and measure 118.4 metres long by 22.8 metres wide at their widest point.
- The DSVs would be deployed for missions involving deep sea diving. Also equipped with a Deep Submergence Rescue Vehicle (DSRV), the DSVs can conduct submarine rescue operations when required.
- These vessels will also be able to perform sustained patrolling, search and rescue missions, and Helicopter Operations on the high seas.
- The Diving Support Vessels project, which has over 80% indigenous content, increased local employment opportunities and encouraged indigenization, which will contribute to the growth of India’s economy.
