Indian desert cat sighted in Panna Tiger Reserve

Recently, an Indian desert cat has been spotted for the first time in Madhya Pradesh’s Panna Tiger Reserve (PTR). The cat was spotted in the reserve’s Akola buffer zone.

  • The Indian desert cat also known as the Asiatic wildcat (Felis lybica ornata) is an African wildcat subspecies.
  • This cat is found in deserts and can survive without water. The toes of the species have cushion like hair which help it balance the fluctuating desert temperatures.

About Panna Tiger Reserve

  • Panna is the 22nd Tiger Reserve of India and 5h in Madhya Pradesh . The Reserve is situated in the Vindhyan Ranges and spreads over Panna and Chattarpur districts in the north of the state.
  • Panna National Park was created in 1981. It was declared a Project Tiger Reserve by Government of India in 1994. The National Park consists of areas from the former Gangau Wildlife Sanctuary created in 1975.
  • The Ken river , which flows through the Reserve from south to north, is home for Gharial and Mugger, and other aquatic fauna and is one of the least polluted rivers and a tributary of Yamuna.
  • UNESCO has included Panna in its ‘World Network of Biosphere Reserve.’
  • Panna is third UNESCO Biosphere reserve in the state of Madhya Pradesh after Panchmarhi and Amarkantak. Panna is also the 12th UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in India.
