Indian Army raises an additional company for revitalisation of the Gomti river

Inspired by the success of the Composite Ecological Task force (CETF) for rejuvenation of Ganga, the Indian Army has raised an additional company for revitalisation of the Gomti river.

  • Gomti Company Formation:
    • The Gomti Company was established under the Indian Army’s Central Command Headquarters in Lucknow, effective January 1, 2025.
    • The company is an additional effort, inspired by the success of the first Composite Ecological Task Force (CETF), raised by the Indian Army in 2019 for the Ganga river.
  • Background of CETF:
    • The 137 CETF, also known as the Ganga Task Force, was created to support the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG).
    • It is funded by the Ministry of Jal Shakti and comprises an ex-servicemen-based unit tasked with augmenting the efforts to clean and rejuvenate the Ganga.
  • Tasks Undertaken by CETF:
    • Planting vetiver grass for riverbank stabilization.
    • Conducting pollution monitoring to provide data used as benchmarks by NMCG.
    • Patrolling ghats and conducting awareness programs to engage the public in clean river initiatives.
  • Gomti River Details:
    • The Gomti River originates from Gomath Tal (formerly known as Fulhar Jheel) near Madho Tanda in Pilibhit, Uttar Pradesh.
    • It travels about 940 km before merging with the Ganga River near Saidpur/Kaithi in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh.
    • As a tributary of the Ganga, its health directly impacts the larger river system.
  • Significance of the Initiative:
    • By extending similar efforts to the Gomti River, the Indian Army demonstrates a commitment to holistic river rejuvenation.
    • This initiative addresses critical ecological concerns, including pollution reduction, habitat restoration, and community engagement, essential for long-term sustainability.
