The Indian Army has installed a statue of Maratha warrior Chhatrapati Shivaji on the bank of Pangong lake at an altitude of 14,300 feet, a region that is close to the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China in the eastern Ladakh sector.

- The statue was inaugurated by officers of the Maratha Light Infantry. The Army’s Leh-based 14 Corps said the inauguration of the statue celebrated the unwavering spirit of the Indian ruler as his legacy remains a source of inspiration.
- However, a local councillor expressed discontent over the installation of the statue.
About Pangong Lake
- Pangong Lake, situated at a height of almost 4,350m, is the world’s highest saltwater lake.
- Its water, which seems to be dyed in blue, stand in stark contrast to the arid mountains surrounding it.
- Extending to almost 160km, one-third of the Pangong Lake lies in India and the other two-thirds in China.
- Pangong Lake, one of the most famous lakes derives its name from the Tibetan word, “Pangong Tso”, which means “high grassland lake”.
- Pangong Lake is also known to change colors, appearing blue, green and red at different times.
