The India and UK migration and mobility partnership was signed by British home secretary Priti Patel and external affairs minister S Jaishankar on May 4, 2021 in London.
- The pact, coincides with the virtual India-UK Summit held on May 4, will facilitate up to 3,000 young Indian professionals availing employment in the UK every year, and also enhance bilateral cooperation in combating illegal migration.
- According to the agreement, children born to Indians staying illegally in the United Kingdom will be granted emergency travel documents to return along with parents based on birth certificates issued by the British authorities. British citizenship is not acquired by birth alone; there are a combination of factors, including the year of birth and parents’ circumstances.
- Both sides have set April 2022 as the deadline for implementing the migration and mobility partnership.
