India successfully tests Indian Army’s first ‘Bhargavastra’ counter-drone micro missiles

India has achieved a significant milestone in its defense capabilities with the successful testing of its first indigenous micro-missile system, designed to counter the emerging threat of swarm drones.

This breakthrough technology is part of the ‘Bhargavastra’ multi-layer counter-drone system, showcasing an advanced and cost-effective approach to neutralizing enemy UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles).

Key Highlights of the Tests:

  • Location: Conducted at the Gopalpur Seaward Firing Ranges (GSFR) in Odisha.
  • Developer: Designed and developed by Economic Explosives Ltd, a subsidiary of Solar Industries India Ltd.
  • Trial Details:
    • First Trial (January 12, 2025):
      • Target: Stationary aerial target.
      • Distance: 2,500 meters.
      • Height: 400 meters.
    • Second Trial (January 13, 2025):
      • Target: Moving electronic target.

Features of the Bhargavastra System:

  • Detection Capability:
    • Can identify small, incoming drones at a range of over 6 kilometers.
  • Micro-Missile Performance:
    • Fires 64 micro-missiles simultaneously, ensuring effective neutralization of swarm drone attacks.
    • Guided munitions provide precision targeting at an affordable cost.
  • Deployment:
    • Mounted on a mobile platform, allowing quick and flexible deployment to threat zones.
  • Multi-Layered Defense:
    • The system incorporates multiple layers of detection and response, enabling it to handle large-scale drone threats effectively.
