India Renames Astra MK-III as ‘Gandiva’

India’s latest and most advanced air-to-air missile, the Astra MK-III, has been officially renamed Gandiva, after the legendary bow of Arjuna from the Mahabharata. Currently under development by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), this beyond visual range (BVR) missile is set to redefine modern air combat with its exceptional range and precision.

Key Features of Gandiva Missile

  • Maximum Range:
    • 340 km when targeting at an altitude of 20 km.
    • 190 km when targeting at an altitude of 8 km.
  • Aircraft Compatibility: Will be deployed on Sukhoi Su-30MKI and LCA Tejas.
  • Surpassing Global Competitors:
    • Outranges China’s PL-15 missile (300 km range) and U.S. AIM-174 BVRAAM (240 km range).
    • Rafale jets in the Indian Air Force (IAF) currently use the French MBDA Meteor, which has a range of 200 km, far less than Gandiva.

Strategic Importance

  • Strengthens India’s aerial superiority by surpassing the range of existing BVR missiles worldwide.
  • Enhances deterrence capabilities, allowing Indian fighter jets to engage enemy aircraft from greater distances.
  • Boosts self-reliance in defense, reinforcing the ‘Make in India’ initiative.
