India has been ranked 168 out of 180 countries on the Environmental Performance Index 2020, released by Yale and Columbia Universities along with the World Economic Forum. India’s total score is 27.7.
According to the report, India’s low EPI scores indicate the need for greater attention to the spectrum of sustainability requirements, with a high-priority focus on critical issues such as air and water quality, biodiversity,
and climate change.
India has fared well in fisheries where it ranks 35, whereas it performed poorly in Health (172), Heavy metals-lead (174), ecosystem vitality (174) indicators.
Denmark (score 82.5) came in first place, followed by Luxembourg and Switzerland. The United Kingdom ranked fourth.

The 2020 Environmental Performance Index (EPI) provides a data-driven summary of the state of sustainability around the world. Using 32 performance indicators across 11 issue categories.
The EPI ranks 180 countries on environmental health and ecosystem vitality. These indicators provide a gauge at a national scale of how close countries are to established environmental policy targets.
The Environmental Performance Index (EPI) is a joint project of the Yale Center for Environmental Law & Policy and The Center for International Earth Science Information Network (CIESIN) at Columbia University’s Earth Institute. The EPI is produced in collaboration with the World Economic Forum (WEF).
