India Rankings 2022: IIT-M ranked India’s top higher education institute

The Ministry of Education released the India Rankings 2022 on July 15, which is based on the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF).

  • Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Madras, is yet again the top higher educational institute in the country followed by Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, and IIT Bombay.
  • Among Indian universities, IISc, Jawahar Lal Nehru University , Jamia Milia Islamia, Jadavpur University and Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham were among the top five.
  • And among the top five colleges in the country are Miranda House, Hindu College, Presidency College, Loyola College and Lady Shri Ram College for Women.

About National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF)

  • The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), launched in November 2015 by the Ministry of Education, was used for this edition as well as for the past six editions of India Rankings released for the years 2016 to 2022.
  • It ranks colleges, universities and research institutions and also provides an overall ranking of all of them combined.
  • Institutes are also ranked across seven subject domains, namely engineering, management, pharmacy, law, medical, architecture and dental.

Five broad categories of parameters identified in the NIRF and their weightage on scale of 10 are given below:

  • Teaching, Learning & Resources: 0.30
  • Research and Professional Practice: 0.30
  • Graduation Outcomes: 0.20
  • Outreach and Inclusivity: 0.10
  • Perception: 0.10
