The Union Cabinet has approved the proposal of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change for signing an MoU with the Government of Nepal on biodiversity conservation.
- The MoU aims to strengthen and enhance the coordination and cooperation in the field of forests, wildlife, environment, biodiversity conservation and climate change, including restoration of corridors and interlinking areas and share knowledge and best practices, between the two countries.
- The MoU would help in promoting cooperation between the Parties in the field of forests, wildlife, environment, biodiversity conservation and climate change, including restoration of corridors and interlinking areas and sharing knowledge and best practices.
India-Nepal Transboundary Proacted Areas
- The nearly 800 km. long region along the India- Nepal border hosts rich and unique wildlife habitats.
- Located in this landscape is the Valmiki Tiger Reserve, Bihar, which shares its boundary with the Chitwan National Park and Parsa Wildlife Reserve in Nepal.
- Similarly, India’s Dudhwa Tiger Reserve in Uttar Pradesh shares a border with Shuklaphanta National Park in Nepal.
- The Terai Arc Landscape (TAL) is an 800km stretch between the river Yamuna in the west and the river Bhagmati in the east, comprising the Shivalik hills, the adjoining bhabhar areas and the Terai flood plains . The landscape boasts of some of India’s most well-known Tiger Reserves and Protected Areas such as Corbett Tiger Reserve, Rajaji National Park, Dudhwa Tiger Reserve, Valmiki Tiger Reserve and Nepal’s Bardia Wildlife Sanctuary, Chitwan National Park, and Sukhla Phanta Wildlife Sanctuary.
- The trans-boundary Sacred Himalayan Landscape (SHL) extends from Nepal’s Langtang National park, through India and into Bhutan’s Jigme Khesar Strict Nature Reserve.
- The SHL includes Langtang National Park, Sagarmatha National Park, Makalu Barun National Park, Kanchenjunga Conservation Area, and Tinjure-Milke-Jaljale Complex (Nepal); Khangchendzonga National Park, Singalila National Park and Neora Valley National Park (India); Fambong Lho Wildlife Sanctuary, Maenam Wildlife Sanctuary etc (Bhutan).
