India joined Lusophone countries as Associate Observer

India has joined the Community of Portuguese Language Countries, CPLP as Associate Observer in July 2021.

  • This sets a new platform for strengthening India’s historic bonds of friendship with Lusophone countries and pursuing cooperation in areas of mutual interest.
  • The move will further enrich and strengthen India’s ties with the Portuguese speaking world.

Which are Lusophone countries?

  • A Portuguese-speaking person or nation is referred to as “Lusophone” (lusófono).
  • It is the sole official language of Portugal, Angola, Mozambique, Guinea-Bissau, Cape Verde, São Tomé and Príncipe, and Brazil.
