According too the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (Sipri) report, India was the world’s second-largest arms importer behind Saudi Arabia, during 2015-19.
Russia remains the largest supplier to India even though its share of Indian weapons purchases declined from 72% to 56%.
The report titled “Trends in international arms transfers 2019” was released on March 10, 2020.
Features of the report
The five largest arms importers during 2015-19 were Saudi Arabia, India, Egypt, Australia and China. Together these five accounted for 36% of all arms imports.
Saudi Arabia, India and China were also among the top five importers during 2010–14.
Pakistan was ranked the 11th largest arms importer in the world.
India is at 23rd place among the world’s 25 largest arms exporters, with its main clients being Myanmar, Sri Lanka and Mauritius.
