India, Guyana signed ten agreements

In November 2024, Prime Minister Modi was on a three-day visit to Guyana. He was received at the airport by President Dr. Mohammed Irfaan Ali, Prime Minister Mark Anthony Phillips, and over a dozen Cabinet ministers.

  • This was the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Guyana in 56 years.
  • During the visit, Guyana conferred its highest national award, “The Order of Excellence,” on Prime Minister Modi.
  • Barbados also conffered the prestigious Honorary Order of Freedom of Barbados on the Prime Minister. A few days back, Dominica had also announced its highest national award, the Dominica Award of Honour.
  • India and Guyana have signed ten agreements to enhance cooperation in several areas including health, hydrocarbons, agriculture and allied sectors.
  • The Memorandum of Understandings (MoUs) were signed on cooperation in the field of medical products, Janaushadhi scheme, Cultural Exchange Programme, deployment of UPI like system in Guyana and cooperation and collaboration in field of broadcasting between Prasar Bharati and National Communications Network, Guyana.
  • Besides, MoU was also signed between National Defence Institute, Guyana and Rashtriya Raksha University, Gujarat.
  • Prime Minister Modi noted that Guyana is associated with various initiatives taken by India, such as the International Solar Alliance, the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure, and the Global Biofuel Alliance. He said, these collaborations will help both nations to strengthen their efforts towards a green and sustainable future globally.
