India has been elected to four main bodies of the UN Economic and Social Council (UN-ECOSOC). India was elected to following four ECOSOC Bodies:
- Commission for Social Development,
- Committee on Non-Governmental Organizations,
- Commission on Science & Technology for Development and
- Committee for Economic, Social and Cultural Rights.
Ambassador Preeti Saran was elected to Committee for Economic, Social and Cultural Rights.
About ECOSOC
- The Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) is one of the six principal organs of the UN System established by the UN Charter in 1945.
- ECOSOC consists of 54 members of the United Nations elected by the General Assembly.
- The Economic and Social Council is at the heart of the United Nations system to advance the three dimensions of sustainable development – economic, social and environmental.
