India calls comprehensive ceasefire during ‘Arria Formula’ meeting

India has told the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) that it calls for an “immediate comprehensive ceasefire” in Afghanistan, while welcoming all opportunities to bring peace to the country.

  • India’s position was articulated by its Permanent Representative to the United Nations, T.S. Tirumurti, at a UNSC meeting on November 20, 2020.
  • The meeting was convened under the Arria Formula.

What is Arria Formula?

  • The Arria Formula is an informally convened meeting at the request of a UNSC member.
  • This informal arrangement allows the Council greater flexibility to be briefed about international peace and security issues.
  • It has been used frequently and assumed growing importance since it was first implemented in March, 1992.
  • Current and incoming members of the UNSC spoke on how the Council could support the Afghan peace process.
