India assumes Chairmanship of ILO’s Governing Body

Labour and Employment Secretary, Apurva Chandra, has been elected as the Chairperson of the Governing Body of the ILO for the period October 2020- June 2021.

  • After 35 years, India has assumed the Chairmanship of the Governing Body of International Labour Organization (ILO).
  • It marks a new chapter in the 100 years of productive relationship between India and ILO.

About ILO and three main bodies

  • The only tripartite U.N. agency, since 1919 the ILO brings together governments, employers and workers of 187 member States , to set labour standards, develop policies and devise programmes promoting decent work for all women and men.
  • The ILO accomplishes its work through three main bodies which comprise governments’, employers’ and workers’ representatives.
  • The International labour Conference sets the International labour standards and the broad policies of the ILO.
  • The Governing Body is the apex executive body of the ILO which decides policies, programmes, agenda, budget and elects the Director-General. At present ILO has 187 members.
  • The International Labour Office at Geneva is the permanent secretariat of the International Labour Organization.
