Labour and Employment Secretary, Apurva Chandra, has been elected as the Chairperson of the Governing Body of the ILO for the period October 2020- June 2021.
- After 35 years, India has assumed the Chairmanship of the Governing Body of International Labour Organization (ILO).
- It marks a new chapter in the 100 years of productive relationship between India and ILO.
About ILO and three main bodies
- The only tripartite U.N. agency, since 1919 the ILO brings together governments, employers and workers of 187 member States , to set labour standards, develop policies and devise programmes promoting decent work for all women and men.
- The ILO accomplishes its work through three main bodies which comprise governments’, employers’ and workers’ representatives.
- The International labour Conference sets the International labour standards and the broad policies of the ILO.
- The Governing Body is the apex executive body of the ILO which decides policies, programmes, agenda, budget and elects the Director-General. At present ILO has 187 members.
- The International Labour Office at Geneva is the permanent secretariat of the International Labour Organization.
