Union Minister of Coal and Mines Shri Pralhad Joshi on August 31 said that India aims for 100 million tonnes (MT) coal gasification by 2030 with investments worth over Rs. 4 lakh crores.
- For encouraging use of clean sources of fuel, government has provided for a concession of 20% on revenue share of coal used for gasification.
- According to the NITI Aayog, the high ash content in the Indian coal still remains a major hindrance towards developing an appropriate technology which can be run on commercial basis.
- Gasification is a technological process that can convert any carbonaceous (carbon-based) raw material such as coal into fuel gas, also known as synthesis gas (syngas for short).
- Gasification occurs in a gasifier, generally a high temperature/pressure vessel where oxygen (or air) and steam are directly contacted with the coal or other feed material causing a series of chemical reactions to occur that convert the feed to syngas.
The resulting “syngas” is comprised primarily of carbon monoxide and hydrogen, and occasionally other gaseous compounds.
