Rajya Sabha approved the Immigration and Foreigners Bill, 2025 on April 2, 2025, after it was passed in Lok Sabha on March 27, 2025.
- Piloted by the Union Home Ministry, the bill repeals four existing laws:
🔹 Passport (Entry into India) Act, 1920
🔹 Registration of Foreigners Act, 1939
🔹 Foreigners Act, 1946
🔹 Immigration (Carriers’ Liability) Act, 2000
New Provisions:
- Stronger Penalties: Using forged passports/visas will lead to up to 7 years in jail and fines up to ₹10 lakh (up from 2 years & ₹1 lakh earlier).
- Tighter Government Control: The Centre can regulate places frequented by foreigners, restrict access, or enforce operational conditions.
- Streamlined Immigration Framework: Replaces outdated laws with one comprehensive legislation
