Hul Kranti Diwas

The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi has paid tributes to tribal heroes like Sidhu-Kanhu, Chand-Bhairav and Phoolo-Jhano for their self-respect and valour against the atrocities of the British Empire.

Hul Kranti Diwas is celebrated on June 30 every year to mark the independence movement of 1855 led by tribal heroes Sidho, Kanho, Chand, Bhairav, among others.

The Santal uprising of 1855, remembered simply as Hul (‘rebellion’ in Santali), was against exploitative moneylenders (mahajans) and landowners (zamindars), and their colonial masters.

The Santhals described zamindars, darogas, and moneylenders by the umbrella term ‘diku’, in an attempt to safeguard the economic, cultural, and religious aspects of their lives.
