HKU1

A woman in Kolkata has tested positive for Human Coronavirus HKU1, raising concerns. However, health experts reassure that HKU1 is not new and is unlikely to cause a widespread outbreak.

What is HKU1?

  • Discovered in 2004 at Hong Kong University
  • Mild respiratory virus, similar to the common cold
  • Belongs to Betacoronavirus hongkonense species
  • One of four common cold-causing coronaviruses (NL63, OC43, 229E, HKU1)

How Does HKU1 Spread?

  • Direct contact with infected persons
  • Airborne transmission via coughing & sneezing
  • Surface contamination (touching infected surfaces & then face)

How Severe Is It?

  • Unlike SARS, MERS, and COVID-19, HKU1 rarely causes severe illness
  • Symptoms usually include cough, fever, sore throat, & mild respiratory issues
  • No specific treatment, managed like a common cold
