Charanjit Singh Channie became the first Dalit Chief Minister of Punjab

Charanjit Singh Channi was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Punjab on September 20, 2021 at Raj Bhavan in Chandigarh.

  • He became the first Dalit Chief Minister of the state. Governor Banwarilal Purohit administered him oath of office and secrecy.
  • In Punjab, which has the highest percentage of Dalit population among the States — close to 32% — political parties have been making all out efforts to garner their support
  • Channi replaced the Captain Amarinder Singh, who had resigned from the post of Chief Minister on September 18, 2021 after being allegedly humiliated by the party.
