Gwalior and Orchha included in the UNESCO World Heritage City list

According to the Madhya Pradesh Government, Gwalior and Orchha have been included in the list of World Heritage City (Historic Urban landscape Planning) by UNESCO.

About Orchha

  • Orchha is located in the Niwari district (Bundelkhand region) of Madhya Pradesh.
  • The Orchha town-on the banks of river Betwa, was founded in the 16th century by the Bundela Rajput Chief, Rudra Pratap. Here, the river Betwa splits into seven channels, also called the Satdhara.
  • It was the 16th century capital of the erstwhile Bundela dynasty.
  • Some of the world famous temples and places places located here are:
    • Orchha Raj Mahal,
    • Jahangir Mahal,
    • Ramaraja Mandir,
    • Rai Praveen Mahal,
    • Laxminarayan Mandir

Gwalior city

  • According to the district administration profile, Gwalior district was named after a famous fort which was taken from the name of Pahadi. This flat summit was called Gopachal, Gopgiri, Gop Mountain or Gopadri. This has created the word Gwalior.
  • Gwalior city has been the capital of Gurjar Pratihar, Tomar, Baghel Kachhwahs and Scindia Rajvansh.
  • Gwalior is known for its palaces and temples, including the intricately carved Sas Bahu Ka Mandir temple.
