Floods in eight districts of Bangladesh were caused by heavy rainfall and not water release from the dam on the Gumti river in Tripura, India said on 22 August.
- This comes after India faced criticism from Bangladesh over the sudden floods, with allegations they were caused by the opening of sluice gates of the Tripura dam.
- India has three water-level observation sites along the 120-km stretch of the Gumti river from the Dumbur dam to the Bangladeshi border at Amarpur, Sonamura, and Sonamura 2.
- The Gumti basin is situated in the lower middle part of Tripura. Gumti is the major river of Tripura.
- Gumti rises from the range connecting Longtharai and Atharamura in Tripura.
- The Gumti basin is surrounded by Bangladesh on its east and west.
- The catchment area of river Gumti is 2,492 km2 within Indian Union and it has the largest basin among the rivers of Tripura.
- The river then flows through plains of Bangladesh and meets the Meghna river system near Daudkandi.
