Guinea confirms West Africa’s first case of Marburg disease

West Africa’s first case of the extremely contagious and deadly Marburg virus was confirmed in Guinea August 9, 2021, said the WHO.

  • The virus, which is carried by bats and has a fatality rate of up to 88 percent, was found in samples taken from a patient who died on 2 August in southern Gueckedou prefecture.
  • Marburg virus is a highly dangerous pathogen that causes haemorrhagic fever.
  • lts average fatality rate is 50%, in arange of 24- 88% .
  • Virus is part of the so- called filovirus family, to which the Ebola virus also belongs.
  • The common symptoms of a Marburg infection are fever, headache, fatigue, abdominal pain and gingival hemorrhage.
