Goa becomes the first rabies-free state in India

Goa has become the first rabies-free state in the country. According to Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, Goa has not reported a single rabies case in the last three years.

  • The task of rabies control has been carried out by Mission Rabies project, which is being run through a central government grant.
  • According to CDC, Rabies is a fatal but preventable viral disease. It can spread to people and pets if they are bitten or scratched by a rabid animal.
  • The rabies virus infects the central nervous system. If a person does not receive the appropriate medical care after a potential rabies exposure, the virus can cause disease in the brain, ultimately resulting in death.
