Glycosmis albicarpa-A new species of gin berry

Glycosmis albicarpa is a new species of gin berry discovered from the Kanyakumari Wildlife Sanctuary in Tamil Nadu.

  • It was found as undergrowth in the Tirunelveli semi-evergreen forests at the Panagudi forest section of the wildlife sanctuary.

Basic facts

  • The new species, discovered by the scientists from the Botanical Survey of India (BSI), endemic to the southern Western Ghats.
  • The species belongs to the Orange family Rutaceae. Glycosmis albicarpa is a species with a distinct large white fruits.
  • Many of the related plants of these taxonomic groups are being utilised for their medicinal values and food.
  • Berries of the Glycosmis species have the unique characteristic of ‘gin aroma’ and gained in popularity as an edible fruit.

About Kanyakumari Wildlife Sanctuary

  • Kanyakumari is 402.4 km2 protected area, It is also a tiger habitat.
  • There are seven rivers that originate in this forest, including the Tamaraibarani and Pahruli river.
