Global Climate Risk Index 2021

According to the Global Climate Risk Index 2021, India has been ranked 7th among countries most affected in 2019 by climate change.

  • The Global Climate Risk Index 2021 was released on January 25, 2021 by Germanwatch — an NGO based in Bonn, Germany.
  • The Cyclone Idai caused catastrophic damage and a humanitarian crisis, making Mozambique and Zimbabwe the two most affected countries in 2019.
  • As per the index, globally, 11.8 million people were affected by intense monsoon with the economic damage estimated to be US $10 billion.
  • Between 2000 and 2019, over 4,75,000 people lost their lives as a direct result of more than 11,000 extreme weather events globally, and economic losses amounted to around US $2.56 trillion (in purchasing power parities).
  • The Global Climate Risk Index analyses quantified impacts of extreme weather events both in terms of the fatalities and economic losses.
