Gigabit Connectivity with Sri Lanka

-Union Minister for Law and Justice and Electronics and IT Shri Ravi Shankar Prasad during his Sri Lanka visit, inaugurated the gigabit connectivity between the ‘National Knowledge Network’ (NKN) of India and LEARN (Lanka Education And Research Network: LEARN) network of Sri Lanka’ on 15 January, 2018.

-Gigabit connectivity is dedicated high speed internet connectivity that will boost the collaboration among the academic institutions of two South Asian nations.

-1 Gigabit means internet speed of 1,000,000,000 bits per second.

What is National Knowledge Network: The Cabinet Committee on Infrastructure in March 2010 approved the establishment of the National Knowledge Network (NKN) at an outlay of Rs 5990 Crore. This network is being be implemented by National Informatics Centre (NIC). NKN aims to connect all universities, research institutions, libraries, laboratories, healthcare and agricultural institutions across the country to boost collaboration and access to knowledge. So far over 1,648 institutions have been connected through this network.

-National Informatics Centre (NIC) was established in 1976.
