Germany General Election 2021

Mr. Olaf Scholz’s Social Democrat (SPD) party came first in the German national election held on September 27, 2021.

  • The SPD is hoping to lead a government for the first time since 2005 in a coalition with the Greens and the liberal Free Democrats (FDP).
  • The SPD, Germany’s oldest party, won 25.7 per cent of the vote, up five percentage points from the 2017 federal election, ahead of Ms. Angela Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union (CDU)/CSU conservative bloc on 24.1 per cent.
  • The Greens came in with 14.8 per cent and the FDP won 11.5 per cent.
  • Merkel is the third leader from the CDU to have had an extraordinarily long tenure as Chancellor. The other two leaders were Dr Konrad Adenauer (1949-63), who laid the foundation of West Germany, and Dr Helmut Kohl (1982-98), who was called the Chancellor of Unification.
