The European Union (EU) Ambassador to Bangladesh Charles Whitley recently said that holding of free and fair elections in Bangladesh can open the doors for availing of GSP plus benefits of zero tariff on a large number of export items to European markets under the GSP plus facility.
About Generalised Scheme of Preferences Plus (GSP+)
- The European Union’s Generalised Scheme of Preferences Plus (GSP+) gives developing countries a special incentive to pursue sustainable development and good governance.
- Eligible countries have to implement 27 international conventions on human rights, labour rights, the environment and good governance.
- In return, the EU cuts its import duties to zero on more than two thirds of the tariff lines of their exports.
- Current Beneficiary countries are: Bolivia, Cape Verde, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Pakistan, Philippines and Sri Lanka.
