External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar participated in the first-ever Joint Ministerial Meeting of the L.69 and C-10 groupings of nations on the sidelines of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York on 26 September, 2024.
- During the meeting, Jaishankar stressed the need for reforms in the United Nations Security Council’s membership, both in its permanent and non-permanent categories.
- The L.69 Annual Ministerial Meeting was chaired by Prime Minister Ralph E. Gonsalves of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, who serves as the spokesperson for the L.69.
- L69 is a grouping that includes countries from Africa, Latin America, Caribbean, Pacific Island states and Asia. In 2007-08, the group had tabled a document – L69.
- C-10 is the African Union’s Committee of 10.
- Earlier, the Group of Four (G4) countries — India, Brazil, Germany and Japan — seeking permanent membership and reform of the UN Security Council (UNSC) on September 26, 2024 called for urgent reform of the world body.
- The G4 Ministers reiterated the need for an increase in both permanent and non-permanent categories of UNSC membership, to enhance the participation of developing countries, as well as those significantly contributing to international peace and security at the UNSC .
- Both the L69 and the G4 reaffirmed their strong support to the Common African Position (CAP) based on the Ezulwini Consensus and the Sirte Declaration.
