First ever goods train reached Rani Gaidinliu Railway Station

The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi has lauded the first ever goods train that reached Rani Gaidinliu Railway Station in Manipur’s Tamenglong district and said that Manipur’s connectivity will be enhanced and commerce will be boosted.

  • After 75 years of India’s Independence, first goods train reaches Rani Gaidinliu Railway Station, Tamenglong in Manipur.
  • The freight train arrived at the Rani Gaidinliu station on January 27, days after a passenger train from Silchar in Assam reached the Bongaichungpao railway station in the state.
  • The Rani Gaidinliu railway station, which was earlier named Kaimai railway station, was renamed in 2021 by the Manipur chief minister after the freedom fighter to commemorate her great contribution in the freedom struggle.
  • Rani Gaidinliu railway station is part of the Jiribam-Imphal railway new broad gauge railway line project.

Who was Rani Gaidinliu ?

  • A spiritual and political leader, Rani Gaidinliu, of the Rongmei tribe, was born on January 26, 1915 at Luangkao village, now in Taosem Sub-Division under Tamenglong District of Manipur.
  • At 13, she became associated with freedom fighter and religious leader, Haipou Jadonang.
  • Jadonang, started the ‘Heraka movement’, based on ancestral Naga religion, and envisioned an independent Naga kingdom (or Naga-Raja).
  • After the execution of Jadonang, she took up the leadership of the Heraka movement.
  • Rani started a serious revolt against the British and was eventually imprisoned for life. She was released after 14 years, in 1947.
