Why in the News?
The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has arrested two persons and seized a consignment of exotic macaws which had been smuggled from Bangladesh to Kolkata and was on its way to Bengaluru. The cargo contained 22 exotic birds kept in cramped cages identified as Hyacinth macaw, Pesquet’s parrot, Severe macaw and Hahn’s macaw.
About Hyacinth Macaws
The seized macaws are protected under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), with Hyacinth macaw being accorded the highest protection.
The hyacinth macaw is possibly the most stunning of the macaw family.
It is the largest of all parrots.
It is a stunning cobalt color all over its body, with a ring of bright yellow around its eye.
The hyacinth macaw is native to central and eastern South America.
