Former Supreme Court judge Justice Ajay Manikrao Khanwilkar on 27th February appointed as the chairperson of Lokpal.
- Justice Khanwilkar served as the judge of Supreme Court from May 13, 2016 to July 29, 2022.
- Justice Lingappa Narayana Swamy, Justice Sanjay Yadav and Justice Ritu Raj Awasthi have been appointed as the judicial members.
- The chairperson and members of the Lokpal are appointed by the President after obtaining the recommendations of a Selection Committee having the prime minister as its chairperson.
- Apart from a chairperson, the Lokpal can have eight members — four judicial and as many non-judicial.
- The Lokpal has been working without its regular chief after Justice Pinaki Chandra Ghose completed his term on May 27, 2022.
About Lokpal
- The Lokpal and Lokayuktas Act, 2013 paved the way for the institution of the Lokpal, an independent statutory body body meant to inquire and investigate into allegations of corruption against public functionaries including the Prime Minister.
- The Act provides for the appointment of a former Chief Justice of India, Supreme Court judge or an eminent person as Chairperson.
- Justice Pinaki Chandra Ghosh was appointed as country’s first Lokpal.
