European Union declared ‘LGBT freedom zone’

The European Parliament on March 12, 2021 declared the entire 27-member bloc as an “LGBTIQ Freedom Zone”.

  • The EU resolution declares that “LGBTIQ persons everywhere in the EU should enjoy the freedom to live and publicly show their sexual orientation and gender identity without fear of intolerance, discrimination or persecution”.
  • The LGBTIQ is the acronym of lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, non-binary, intersex and queer
  • The symbolic resolution was passed in response to local authorities in Poland labelling themselves “LGBT ideology-free zones” in recent years.
  • Since March 2019, more than 100 Polish regions, counties and municipalities have adopted resolutions declaring themselves to be free from LGBTIQ “ideology”
  • Same-sex relationships are not legally recognised in Poland, and the country already bans same-sex couples from adopting children together.
