For the first time eight beaches of India have been recommended for the International eco-label, the Blue flag certification.
- On the eve of International Coastal Clean-Up Day (19 September) which is celebrated across 100 countries since 1986, Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) announced the name of the eight beaches.
- The eight beaches are Shivrajpur in Gujarat, Ghoghla in Daman&Diu, Kasarkod and Padubidri beach in Karnataka, Kappad in Kerala, Rushikonda in Andhra Pradesh, Golden beach of Odisha and Radhanagar beach in Andaman and Nicobar.
- Blue Flag beaches are considered the cleanest beaches of the world.
- Blue Flag certification is a globally recognised eco-label accorded by ‘Foundation for Environment Education, Denmark’ based on 33 stringent criteria in four major heads–environmental education and information, bathing water quality, environment management and conservation and safety and services in the beaches.
BEAM
- The event also saw the launch India’s own eco-label BEAMS by e-hoisting the flag -#IAMSAVINGMYBEACH simultaneously at these eight beaches.
- Beach Environment & Aesthetics Management Services (BEAMS ) has been launched by SICOM, under its ICZM (Integrated Coastal Zone Management) project.
