- Eminent economist Surjit S Bhalla was on October 1, 2019 appointed as the Executive Director for India on the board of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for three years.
- The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC), headed by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi Narendra Modi approved the appointment of Bhalla .
- Mr. Bhalla succeeded former RBI deputy governor Subir Gokarn, who died in the US on July 30, 2019.
- Subir Gokarn was appointed as the executive director for India on the board of the IMF in November 2015. He was to complete his term in October 2019.
- The Modi government had appointed Surjit Bhalla as part-time member in the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister. Latter, he resigned from the advisory body in December 2018.
- He was founder chairman of Oxus Research & Investments and worked in key institutions such as Deutsche Bank, Goldman Sachs, and the World Bank.
