Abhijit Banerjee, Esther Duflo and Michael Kremer awarded Nobel Prize in economics 2019

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has awarded the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel 2019 (Nobel Prize in Economics) to Abhijit Banerjee, Esther Duflo and Michael Kremer.

The trio has been awarded “for their experimental approach to alleviating global poverty.”

Abhijit Banerjee and Esther Duflo, both belong to Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, USA whereas Michael Kremer is from Harvard University, Cambridge, USA.

According to the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, “the research conducted by this year’s Laureates has considerably improved our ability to fight global poverty. In just two decades, their new experiment-based approach has transformed development economics, which is now a flourishing field of research .”

About Abhijit Banerjee

Abhijit Banerjee was educated at the University of Calcutta, Jawaharlal Nehru University and Harvard University, where he received his Ph.D. in 1988.

He is currently the Ford Foundation International Professor of Economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

In 2003 he founded the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL), along with Esther Duflo and Sendhil Mullainathan and remains one of the directors of the lab.

He is the author of several books, including “What the Economy Needs Now” (2019), “Poor Economics” (2011), Making Aid Work (2007).
