Dust storm led pollution in Mumbai

Air pollution levels in Mumbai was classified by SAFAR in red category on February 8 with the Air Quality Index (AQI) reaching at 320.

  • Cause: The current high level of pollution in the city is due to a dust storm incursion coupled with cold conditions and weak wind speed.
  • Origin: The dust storm originated on February 3 over Afghanistan, Pakistan, and the border areas of Rajasthan.
  • A storm originating in the Middle East in January 2022 had brought dust and haze to northwestern Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Rajasthan.
  • Effect: Cold-like conditions were recorded in Mumbai.
