The Prime Minister on February 14, 2021 announced that the Central Government has accepted the long-standing demand of Devendrakula Velalar community to be known as Devendra kula Velalar.
- They will now be known by their heritage name and not the six to seven names listed in the Schedule to the Constitution.
- The Prime Minister said that the draft Gazette to amend the Constitutional schedule to correct their name as Devendra kula Velalar has been approved by the central government.
- It will be placed before the Parliament before the start of the next session.
- The demand of seven sub-sects — Devendrakulathan, Kudumban, Pannadi, Kaalaadi, Kadayan, Pallan and Patharia — had not been limited to the name change. They are also demanding that their castes be removed from the Scheduled Caste list and included under MBC (Most Backward Caste).
