Denmark to set up energy island at Gulf of Mannar

Tamil Nadu is planning an energy island in the Gulf of Mannar with the help of Denmark. The island may produce four gigawatt to ten gigawatt of power.

  • The project would generate investment of $5bn to $10b.
  • A delegation of experts from Denmark, led by Energy Minister Dan Jorgensen, met Chief Minister M K Stalin on September 8, 2021.
  • The proposal is part of Green Strategic Partnership signed between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Danish counterpart Mette Frederiksen, who held a virtual summit on September 28, 2020.
  • If the plan materialises, the project will be the first offshore floating wind park in India.
  • The Gulf of Mannar lies between the west coast of Sri Lanka and the south-eastern tip of India.
