Democracy Index 2021-India ranked 46th

The percentage of the world’s population living under some sort of democracy tumbled last year to 45.7 per cent from 49.4 per cent a year earlier according to the Democracy Index 2021 released by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) .

  • India with a rank of 46 found its presence in the flawed democracy segment. The USA has also been placed as a nation with flawed democracy.
  • Pakistan has been placed further below in the hybrid regime with a rank of 104.
  • Topping the list were Norway (1st rank with 9.64 score), New Zealand and Finland, while the U.K. ranked 18th. The U.S., which was given a flawed democracy classification, fell one spot to number 26.
  • Afghanistan and Myanmar took the bottom two spots, just below North Korea.

About the Democracy Index

  • The Democracy Index is based on the clearly stated five categories, i.e. electoral process and pluralism, functioning of the government, political participation, political culture and last but not least, civil liberties.
  • According to these categories, the list has been further bifurcated into three categories encompassing nations that enjoy full democracy, flawed democracy, hybrid regime and authoritarian regime.
