Union Minister Nitin Gadkari announced that the government intends to build an electric highway between Delhi and Mumbai.
- The government aims to run trolley trucks similar to a trolleybus on the electric highways in order to reduce pollution and boost efficiency.
What is an electric highway?
- An electric highway refers to a road which supplies power to vehicles travelling on it, through overhead power lines.
- The government is attempting to build a separate lane for “e-highway” on the 1,300-kilometre-long Delhi-Mumbai Expressway where trucks and buses may go at a speed of 120 kilometres per hour.
- Compared to electric automobiles and two-wheelers, it is probably viable for electric trucks and buses.
- The e-highway concept is not new in western countries.
- Siemens started testing trolley-style automobiles in Germany in 2012. It was reported that at speeds up to 60 mph, hybrid diesel-electric vehicles were equipped with rods that elevate when they encounter highways with overhead power lines.
