The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), headed by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, on June 4 approved the issuance of a Request For Proposal (RFP) for the construction of six conventional submarines under Project-75I at an estimated cost of Rs. 43,000 crore.
- This would be one of the largest ‘Make in India’ projects and it will create a tiered industrial ecosystem for submarine construction in India, said the Defence Minister.
- The Strategic Partnership (SP) model of the Defence Procurement Procedure (DPP) aims to promote the role of Indian industry in manufacturing and build a domestic defence industrial ecosystem.
- Project 75(I) is the 2nd project being undertaken under the SP Model, which aims at providing a major boost to the indigenous design and construction capability of submarines in India.
- The first project under this model executed under the model was the procurement of 111 Naval Utility Helicopters (NUH).
