Cyclone Sitrang that lashed Bangladesh left at least 24 people dead and about 8 million without power across the delta nation.
Key points
- The government said about 10,000 homes were damaged and more than 6,000 hectares of crops were destroyed.
- About 20,000 people were marooned because of flooding triggered by tidal surges in the southern coastal district of Bhola.
- Cyclone Sitrang helped strengthen winds over northwest India and aided the dispersal of air pollution due to Diwali festivities and from other sources such as crop stubble fires.
- India Meteorological Department (IMD) director general M Mohapatra said a trough in the westerlies (elongated region of relatively low atmospheric pressure, often associated with weather systems) also caused the remnant of the cyclone to move in a north-northeasterly direction. He added whenever a cyclone passes, north-westerly winds also pick up as the cyclone pulls winds towards the system.
- After Asani, the March 2022 cyclone which was named by Sri Lanka, cyclone Sitrang was named by Thailand.
- The IMD cyclone list has a total of 169 names including 13 names proposed by each member country, is arranged in a manner that all get to decide it in a sequential method.
