In view of Cyclonic Storm “NIVAR”, the Cabinet Secretary Shri Rajiv Gauba chaired the National Crisis Management Committee (NCMC) meeting on November 24, 2020 through video conferencing with the Chief Secretaries of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Andhra Pradesh and Secretaries of different ministries.
- Fishermen were advised not to venture into the sea and the people in coastal areas are also being evacuated to shelter houses.
- Tamil Nadu had declared a public holiday on November 25 while Puducherry had imposed Section 144 for three days.
About Cyclone Nivar
- Cyclone Nivar is the fourth cyclone to take shape in the North Indian Ocean region in 2020.
- The first three cyclones were Cyclone Gati (made landfall in Somalia on November 22), Cyclone Amphan, (eastern India witnessed it in May), and Cyclone Nisarga (in Maharashtra).
- Nivar is the second cyclone to hit Tamil Nadu in two years after Cyclone Gaja in 2018.
- The name was suggested by Iran.
National Crises Management Committee (NCMC)
- Cabinet Secretary, which is the highest executive officer, heads the NCMC. Secretaries of all the concerned Ministries /Departments as well as organizations are the members of the Committee.
- The NCMC gives direction to the Crisis Management Group as deemed necessary.
