The images taken from the American Landsat spacecraft have revealed a super colony of Adélie penguins on the Danger Islands, the most northerly point of the Antarctic Peninsula.
- These penguins are numbering more than 1.5 million.
- They were first noticed when great patches of their poo, or guano, showed up in pictures taken from the Landsat.
- These Adélie penguins are crammed on to a rocky archipelago.
- The researchers used an algorithm to search for sites of possible penguin activity.
- This finding is really surprising since the Danger Islands are very difficult to reach.

- Penguins are aquatic, flightless birds that are highly adapted to life in the water.
- Penguins are found almost exclusively in the southern hemisphere.
- According to the IUCN Adélie penguins (Pygoscelis adeliae) is found along the entire Antarctic coast and at some of its nearby islands. These are least vulnerable species as per the IUCN red list.
