Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari’s remarks that Samarth Ramdas was the ‘guru’ of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, has stirred controversy in the state. His statement didn’t go down will with some of the politicians of Maharashtra.
- For years, Maharashtra has witnessed a number of controversies over the claim that Brahmin saint Samarth Ramdas was a guru of Shivaji. Claims have also been made that Dadoji Konddeo, another Brahmin in the court of the king’s father Shahaji Maharaj, was a guru of Shivaji.
Who was Samarth Ramdas?
- He was a Marathi saint, philosopher, poet, writer and spiritual master. He was a devotee of the deities Rama and Hanuman.
- The birth name of Samartha Ramdas Swami was Narayan Suryaji Thosar. He was born in 1608 AD in Jamb village on the banks of Godavari river.
- ‘Dasbodh’ , ‘Manache Shlok’ , ‘ Atmaram’, ‘Manapanchak’ , ‘Anandavanbhuvan’, ‘Shivakalyanaraja are some of his literary works.
- His compositions also include numerous aarti. One of his most popular aarti commemorates the Hindu deity Ganesha, and is popularly known as Sukhakarta Dukhaharta.
- In 2017, a photozincography copy of the original charter of land allotment by Chhatrapti Shivaji to his contemporary sage Samarth Ramdas Swami was located at the British Library in London.
