President Droupadi Murmu on 28th September 2023 gave her assent to the Women’s Reservation Bill which was passed by both the Houses during the recent special session of Parliament.
Constitution (106th Amendment) Act
- The Central government has issued a gazette notification for the legislation which is also called Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam.
- After the President’s assent, now the legislation has become a law. Though it was introduced as the Constitution (128th) Amendment Bill in the Lok Sabha, now it will be known as the Constitution (106th Amendment) Act as some proposed constitutional amendments are yet to passed by Parliament.
- The law provides for 33 percent reservation to women in the Lok Sabha and State Assemblies as well as Delhi Assembly.
- 33 percent reservation for women belonging to SCs and STs will also be provided within the existing quota for this category.
- After the president’s assent, the bill became the law of the land.
- On September 20, the bill was passed by the Lok Sabha with near unanimity during the special session of Parliament.
- The Rajya Sabha passed it with unanimity on September 21, the last day of the four-day session.
- The law proposes to reserve 33% or one-third seats for women in the Lok Sabha, state assemblies and the assembly of Delhi.
- The law also has a provision of quota within quota for Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST) and Anglo-Indian women.
